places to visit for halloween

Halloween is one of the most popular celebrations worldwide, and many people love to travel to different destinations to celebrate it. Whether you love Halloween or you just love to dress up, I complied a short list of some of my favorite places to visit for Halloween based on my own experiences and expertise.

Plus, if you want to immerse yourself into the cultural holiday of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) which is right around the same time as Halloween, there are so many great places around Mexico to experience that as well. Read on to find out more.

Hawaii

Several islands have activities for Halloween, however, these are the two most talked about below:

Oahu

Oahu’s most popular Halloween event is Hallowbaloo, which is held in the heart of Honolulu in the Chinatown Arts District. Several blocks are closed off to traffic, so everyone dressed in costume can wander the streets. Here you can enjoy several stages with DJ’s, live music, food and drink vendors, and enter to win the costume contest! The event is family friendly, but does have a more adult presence there.

Halloween Oahu

Oahu has plenty of celebrations for Halloween around the island that you can participate in. To view some of the other activities around Oahu, you can find that at this link here.

Maui

Lahaina’s Front street is home to one of the most talked about Halloween events on Maui. Unfortunately, this year there won’t be a boisterous block party like years past, because the road will open back up after the keiki costume parade. However, there’s still a good reason to make your way to Lahaina for Halloween, because many bars and restaurants offer their own entertainment, drink specials and smaller-scale costume contests. Hopefully next year the festivities will resume like they were in years past.

Disney World & Disneyland

This one is kind of a no-brainer. If you have small children, or just love Disney, this is one of the best places to visit for Halloween. With Mickey’s not so scary Halloween party, you can start enjoying the holiday over 2 months before actual Halloween! This gives you a lot more flexibility with planning as well. This one does sell out fast, so booking early is key.

Disney Halloween

Some of the notable attractions that are offered during Mickey’s not so scary Halloween Party are trick or treat stations throughout the park, Villain characters come out for the night and also are in the parade, and a fantastic fireworks show with Jack Skellington.

Salem, Massachusetts

No Halloween would be complete without a trip to Salem, MA. Here you can participate in their Haunted Happenings. This just happens to be one of the largest celebrations of Halloween in the world! Here you can participate in parties, parades, vendor fairs, walking tours, museums, attractions, and other special events. Put on your costume and join some fun that is steeped in history, haunts, and a bit of magic.

Mexico

While Mexico’s celebrations around Halloween are a bit different and Halloween isn’t the main draw here, it was worth mentioning. Mexico is one of the best places to go and celebrate during this time of year due to its vibrant culture and diverse landscape. The cultural festival of Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is what you want to experience here as it spans several days. Some of the best known cities to celebrate this holiday are Mexico City and Oaxaca.

Mexico Day of dead

In nearly every Mexican city, you can take part and learn about this celebration of the dead and witness beautiful makeup, extravagant costumes, amazing food and desserts, and complex dancing. They honor the dead and give offerings to those who passed before them.
