Read on to find our advice about the best seasons for your dream destination and when you should start planning it.
Spring
Where to Go
The Caribbean islands are the perfect destination for spring. These tropical locations are beautiful and lush in the spring, and offer many wonders to explore. With perfectly warm weather that’s not too hot yet, it is a great time to soak up some sun and swim through the wonders of the crystal clear turquoise waters. The best part is that you won’t have to deal with hurricanes in the spring.
Some other fantastic places to visit in spring are:
- Hawaii
- Costa Rica
- Italy
- Mexico
- Spain
When to Plan
With spring break typically being in the month of March, it’s best to plan ahead of time as much as possible, especially for popular places that are warm, or theme park related. I’d recommend planning a spring vacation in October or November at the latest to ensure the best availability and pricing.
Summer
Where to Go
Summer is the perfect time to take a trip to any of the major cities in the US that boast delicious foods, exciting experiences, famous landmarks, and unique history. Summer is also the best time of the year to visit the great outdoors especially in northern states. You can venture through National Parks, such as the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Arches, and Glacier. Or opt for famous landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Mt. Rushmore, or the Space Needle.
If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, try to travel at the beginning of the summer or near the end, as families with children are likely to be doing most of their traveling at the end of June through the beginning of August.
Some other fantastic places to visit in summer are:
- London
- Canada
- Alaska
- Iceland
When to Plan
Summer is high season for families because the kids are out of school. This is when most people travel so the demand is high. If you’re thinking about a summer vacation to somewhere popular like Disney or Hawaii, don’t wait to plan this. The earlier the better. I’d recommend planning this in December or January, or even earlier to ensure the best availability and pricing.
Fall
Where to Go
Fall is an excellent time to visit places that have landscapes with beautiful fall foliage. Places such as New England and Northern Europe are amazing for this. Cities like New York City or Boston are great options for a fall trip because it’s not too hot or cold outside, yet there are so many things going on in these cities that you will be energized! Fall also tends to be the season that new theater and ballet performances hit the stage in places of art and culture.
However, if you’re yearning for a Caribbean destination but don’t want to deal with a potential hurricane, Aruba is something to consider since it’s out side of the hurricane belt.
Some other great places to visit in the fall are:
- Scotland
- Germany
- Egypt
- Hawaii
When to Plan
Since the demand isn’t as high for fall vacations as other times of the year, you have a little more wiggle room with planning it. Oftentimes you can get away with doing it just a couple months prior. However, I’d recommend planning a fall vacation in May or June to ensure the best availability and pricing.
Winter
Where to Go
Winter trips are typically for either one of two things: Getting away from the cold or going to the cold for skiing. If you are the type that loves the snow and loves to ski, places like Utah, Colorado, Nevada and Oregon are right up your alley. With plenty of ski resort towns to discover, there’s no shortage of options. Yellowstone and Jackson Hole, WY, can also be a neat place to visit in the winter.
If you’re looking to get out of the cold, tropical locations are a well-known and loved tradition for many families during the winter. The Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii, and other warm areas are often busy during the winter. You’ll also find that many warm weather destinations have special cultural celebrations around Christmas, so it’s a fantastic opportunity to experience the season in a new way.
Some other popular places to visit in the winter are:
- Costa Rica
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Las Vegas
When to Plan
If you’re dreaming of a winter getaway especially around Christmas, and to a popular place like Hawaii, the Caribbean or Disney, the earlier you can plan the better. This is a very high season for travelers, and many book their Christmas trips a year or more in advance. If you already know where you want to go and have a head count, let your travel agent know as soon as you know, so they can keep an eye on it for you and jump on it as soon as it becomes available. I’d recommend booking a Christmas getaway no later than 8-9 months prior for the best availability and pricing.
