When you think of paradise, images of white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and lush green mountains often come to mind. Nowhere in the world encapsulates this vision better than the islands of French Polynesia. That is why we think French Polynesia should be on your bucket list.
This past December, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Tahiti, Rangiroa, Moorea, and Bora Bora—an unforgettable journey that introduced me to the unmatched beauty and charm of this exotic destination. From its breathtaking landscapes to its warm and welcoming people, French Polynesia offers an amazing escape like no other.
For those planning their next adventure, I want to share some of the highlights from my trip. I also want to provide a glimpse of the lesser known islands you might want to consider – and why French Polynesia should be on your bucket list. It’s not just a destination for honeymooners!
The Islands I Explored
On my recent FAM (Familiarization) trip to French Polynesia, I had the incredible opportunity to explore four of these stunning islands in French Polynesia. And if you’re wondering what a FAM trip is, these are special journeys designed for travel professionals to experience destinations in depth while also touring resorts. This allows me to provide you with genuine, firsthand recommendations.
Tahiti: The Heart of French Polynesia
Tahiti, the largest island and the cultural and economic hub, serves as the gateway to French Polynesia. Landing in Papeete, the island’s bustling capital, I was immediately captivated by the mix of modern amenities and traditional Polynesian charm. Be sure to visit the vibrant Papeete Market, where you can shop for local crafts, fresh produce, and iconic Tahitian black pearls. For nature enthusiasts, Tahiti’s interior offers lush valleys, cascading waterfalls, and scenic hikes—including the stunning Fautaua Waterfall. There are also black sand beaches you can visit.
Rangiroa: A Diver’s Dream
Known as one of the world’s largest atolls, Rangiroa is a sanctuary for marine life and an underwater paradise for snorkelers and divers. Exploring the Blue Lagoon and Tiputa Pass, you can encounter dolphins, colorful corals, and an abundance of tropical fish. Even if diving isn’t your thing, the sheer beauty of Rangiroa’s lagoon—a kaleidoscope of blues and greens—is reason enough to visit. A snorkeling trip is a must here.
Moorea: The Magical Island
Just a short ferry ride from Tahiti, Moorea (about 30 – 45 mins) is an island of tropical bliss. With its jagged mountain peaks, pineapple plantations, and tranquil lagoons, Moorea feels like stepping into a postcard. (I also got the “Kauai vibes” while I was there) If you like hiking, be sure to check out the Belvedere Lookout for panoramic views, and if snorkeling interests you, you can swim with stingrays and reef sharks in the shallow waters. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a lagoon tour, an ATV tour, or kayak along the crystal-clear waters.
Bora Bora: The Jewel of the South Pacific
Known for its iconic overwater bungalows and beautiful blue lagoon, Bora Bora is a dream destination for couples and luxury seekers. I stayed in an overwater bungalow at two different resorts, and it was nothing short of amazing! My mornings began with coffee on the deck overlooking the lagoon, with one bungalow that came with my own Butler! Snorkeling here was a surreal experience, with colorful coral gardens and an abundance of tropical fish and sea turtles. There’s even a turtle hospital/rehabilitation center that was a unique and educational experience. Beyond the lagoon, Bora Bora’s Mount Otemanu offers a stunning and majestic view.
Other Islands to Explore
During my trip, I visited four of the most popular islands, but French Polynesia boasts over 100 islands and atolls spread across five archipelagos. Here are a few more islands you could consider for your trip:
- Huahine: Often referred to as the “Garden Island,” Huahine is lush, secluded, and rich in ancient Polynesian history. Explore archaeological sites, coconut plantations, and serene beaches.
- Taha’a: Known as the “Vanilla Island,” Taha’a is a fragrant paradise where you can tour vanilla plantations and snorkel in coral gardens. This island shares a lagoon with Raiatea and offers a peaceful retreat.
- Raiatea: The spiritual heart of Polynesia, Raiatea is home to Taputapuātea, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This island is a hub for sailing and is surrounded by vibrant coral reefs.
- Tetiaroa: A private atoll once reserved for Tahitian royalty, Tetiaroa gained fame as Marlon Brando’s island retreat. Today, it’s home to the ultra-luxurious Brando Resort.
- Fakarava: Another diver’s paradise, Fakarava is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with pristine reefs and a unique ecosystem. It’s ideal for eco-tourists seeking an untouched escape.
Why French Polynesia Should Be on Your Bucket List
French Polynesia is more than just a postcard-perfect dream; it’s an adventure waiting to unfold. French Polynesia guarantees an experience that’s not only memorable but also surprisingly within reach. These reasons below are why we think it deserves a top spot on your bucket list.
Unparalleled Natural Beauty
From the dramatic volcanic peaks of Moorea to the serene lagoons of Rangiroa and Bora Bora, French Polynesia offers diverse landscapes that take your breath away at every turn. Whether you’re hiking through lush jungles, kayaking across crystal-clear waters, or simply lounging on a beach, the scenery is unmatched.
Rich Culture and History
The Polynesian culture is vibrant and deeply rooted in tradition. From dance performances to local crafts and storytelling, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the islands’ heritage. Visiting sites like Taputapuātea on Raiatea provides insight into ancient Polynesian life. I’d also recommend trying some of the local dishes such as Poisson Cru (pictured).
Warm Hospitality
The people of French Polynesia are as warm and inviting as the islands themselves. Despite French and Tahitian being the primary languages spoken there, I found that many locals spoke excellent English, so I never felt a language barrier. Their kindness and willingness to share their culture also made my trip even more memorable.
An Accessible Adventure
Contrary to popular belief, visiting French Polynesia doesn’t have to be crazy expensive. Traveling during the off-season offers more affordable rates on flights and accommodations. Additionally, you can find a range of lodging options, from budget-friendly to luxury resorts. While overwater bungalows are iconic, and what everything thinks of when they think of French Polynesia, opting for a land-based room option offers excellent value and the chance to experience the local lifestyle. You can still get an ocean view for an affordable price and still have the same access to the resort.
Proximity and Convenience
If you’re traveling from the U.S., French Polynesia is closer than you might think. Flights from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Papeete take about eight hours, roughly two hours longer than a flight to Hawaii. However, unlike Hawaii, a valid passport is required to visit.
Things to Do in French Polynesia
- Snorkeling and Diving: Explore vibrant coral reefs, swim with manta rays, turtles and reef sharks, and discover marine life unique to the region. Top spots include Rangiroa’s Tiputa Pass and Fakarava’s reef systems.
- Lagoon Tours: Take a boat tour to experience the beauty of the lagoons up close. Many tours include opportunities for snorkeling and enjoying a Polynesian-style picnic on a motu (small islet).
- Cultural Experiences: Attend a traditional Polynesian show, visit vanilla plantations, or learn how to weave baskets and floral crowns.
- Hiking: Trek to viewpoints like Belvedere Lookout in Moorea or explore Bora Bora’s Mount Pahia for breathtaking vistas.
- Relaxation: Whether it’s lounging on a pristine beach or indulging in a spa treatment, French Polynesia is perfect for unwinding. Just the slower pace there is enough to relax you.
My Personal Takeaway
My trip to French Polynesia was nothing short of life-changing. From the vibrant marine life of Rangiroa to the stunning vistas of Moorea and the luxurious escape of Bora Bora, each island offered a unique perspective on paradise. What struck me most was the sheer beauty of the islands and the genuine warmth of the people. Despite it raining for several days, I still found the experience to be magical.
When I returned home I did some pricing for packages, I’m finding it quite affordable during the off season. French Polynesia is not just a luxury destination that feels out of reach for the average person, and it’s not just for honeymooners! There is so much to do and see here, it could be an alternative to visiting Hawaii. If you have already visited the islands of Hawaii, French Polynesia could be the next destination on your list. While it’s similar in some ways, it’s also very much a different experience. Plus many resorts in French Polynesia include daily breakfast and most of them don’t have daily resort fees like Hawaii does.
